FOUNDATION WORK: Cultivating Heightened Awareness For Artistic Creation or Daily Living

FOUNDATION
WORK

Join this one-of-a-kind, 2-day workshop exploring a common set of sustainable movement practices that foster suppleness, strength, and expressiveness, and reaffirm who we can be within any kind of community. Participants will use partnering, compassion, and an inward eye to living and working as a member of an ensemble to explore presence, flexibility, and authenticity. This work benefits all, whether one creates works of art, navigates crowded grocery stores, or sits at a desk all day.
Foundation Work is intended for all ages, abilities and temperaments. Tom and Dana introduce the way into this work through Mobilizations: a sequenced partnering warmup in which a giver and receiver, in turn, compress, stretch, and mobilize the body to free unwanted tension and increase mobility in the joints. These are gentle, structured exercises that increase and specify proprioceptive awareness. After waking up the body, the group will engage in playful exploration of 8 elements of creative movement, using these elements to then create unique physically structured improvisations with one another.
The work is drawn from a variety of sources of movement and performance training. We will be moving through space as individuals, in tandem with partners, and in structured group improvisations. As time allows, we will demonstrate or discuss how such a process lends itself to composition.
Meals and discussions accompany the workshop and are a grand opportunity to explore the work further with one another.
